Barry Sullivan
Barry Sullivan is a highly experienced jewellery appraiser and consultant with over 49 years in the jewellery and horological field, specialising in jewellery forensics. Based on his extensive background, Barry offers unparalleled expertise in appraising jewellery, diamonds, gemstones, precious metals, watches, clocks, silverware, and mayoral regalia.
Barry holds a Horological Degree from the British Horological Institute (1966), and his career includes notable qualifications such as a course in synthetic rubies, sapphires, and emeralds from the Gemmological Institute of Great Britain (Gem-a) in 2010, and an Assessing Mounted Diamonds course from the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) in 2016.
Throughout his career, Barry has worked in various roles, including as a general manager for small jewellers and a senior executive responsible for training. He has also owned and managed multiple jewellery and consultancy businesses. Since 1991, Barry has provided jewellery appraisal and consultancy services, and he is a regular lecturer at the NAJ’s Institute of Registered Valuers’ (IRV) Conference.
Barry is also an active member of several professional bodies. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers (IRV) and has been a member of the Academy of Experts (TAE) since 2008. His expertise is highly sought after, and he has been involved in significant high-profile criminal cases, including those recommended by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and HMRC Fraud Investigation Service (FIS).
As a recognised expert in insurance claims investigations, Barry has over 26 years of experience in historical investigative evaluation of jewellery and watches. His role as Chair of the Valuation Community Group and the Professional & Technical Standards Group at NAJ, along with his involvement in professional education and expert witness work, further cements his standing in the industry.
